Choosing the right golf ball for your game or for company giveaways is very important. Golf balls are manufactured for different types of golfers to help improve their game, and for companies looking for a golf ball to help promote their brand.
Golf ball construction keeps evolving and the leading manufacturers spend millions of pounds per year in research and development.
At the highest level, many PGA Tour Professionals play different balls that offer the best feel, launch and spin rate for their games. This information is gathered on-course and during practice with launch monitors that display all the relevant information for every shot.
All golf balls have a layered design, with each layer affecting distance, launch, spin, and feel. Here are some details that will help you understand the construction of the golf balls:
1. Golf ball Core (Inner Layer)
- Material: Synthetic rubber (material will vary)
- Designed for: Distance and compression of the golf ball
- Differentials:
Large, softer cores = more distance, lower spin
Smaller, firmer cores = more control, higher spin
This ball centre (core) stores the energy of the golf ball during impact, then releases the energy to give speed.

2. Golf Ball Mantle Layer (sometimes more multiple layers)
- Material: Rubber, ionomer or resins (material will vary)
- Designed for: Controls the spin, launch and energy transferred into the golf ball
- Differentials:
One or more layers, which can make up a 1,2,3,4 or 5 piece golf ball.
Softer mantles will increase spin rate with irons and woods
Firmer mantles will usually help reduce driver spin rate and increase ball speed.
3. Cover
The outer layer often has the largest impact on the feel of a golf ball, especially with the putter and wedges.
Materials :Usually Urethane or IonomerPremium golf balls like Titleist ProV1, Srixon Z-Star, Taylormade TP5 and Callaway Chrome Tour, all have a soft cast urethane cover, which helps improve the feel and greenside spin. This cover can vary, some manufacturers have thinner softer covers than others.
Golf balls that have Ionomer covers and usually cheaper, more durable, lower spin and feel firmer off the club face. Our most popular Srixon AD333, Callaway Supersoft and Titleist Trufeel.
4. Golf ball dimples (Surface Design)
Dimples on the golf ball are designed for the best aerodynamics.
If a golf ball was smooth (no dimples) it would actually fly shorter than a dimpled golf ball. Dimples help by reducing the air drag and increasing the lift.
When a golf ball flies through the air, a dimpled golf ball creates a thin turbulent boundary layer of air that sticks to the ball longer.
If the golf ball is smooth it causes the airflow to separate early, creating a low-pressure wake behind the golf ball (drag)
Lift from spin (Magnus effect)
When a golf ball is hit it creates backspin with every golf club (excluding putter). The higher the club loft, the more backspin on the golf ball.
Dimples help the ‘spinning’ ball grip the air, which creates higher pressure underneath and lower pressure above (lift). This results in the golf ball staying in the air for longer.
Types of dimples
Golf balls vary from 300 – 500 dimples, which vary in size, depth and pattern.
For example, Srixon Z-Star golf ball have ‘round’ 338 dimples, whereas Callaway Chrome Tour have 332 ‘hexagonal’ dimples and this pattern is only available on Callaway golf balls.
The TaylorMade TP5 have only 332 round dimples and the Titleist ProV1 has 352 round dimples, and the depth appears to be slightly different on all models.

Colour of golf balls
Golf balls are now supplied invarious colours and designs.
In recent years different designs have become more popular including stripes, splatter, matte colours, vibrant colours and alignment designs.
White golf balls different in colour from brilliant white, matte and opaque. Most tour golf balls are plain white and yellow for senior golfers.
Help choosing the right golf balls
Please check our website for details on the all the golf balls, which we have in budget, mid-range and premium categories. Most manufacturers have information on how their golf balls all compare, which includes the feel, spin, launch and durability. For example Titleist -ProV1 has the performance information on the back of the box for -ProV1, ProV1, ProV1x etc. so that you can purchase golf balls based on their recommendations.
