Rory McIlroy is one of the most recognised names in modern golf, known for his incredible distance off the tee and precision in all aspects of the game. As a multiple major champion and one of the longest hitters on the PGA Tour, McIlroy’s choice of equipment plays a crucial role in his game. Whether you're an avid golfer or just a fan, learning about the tools he uses offers great insight into the level of detail and performance required to succeed at the top level.

With the BMW PGA taking place next week, we’re taking a look into Rory McIlroy’s bag to give you all the insights into what helps make him the number 1 ranked golfer on the DP World Tour.

Golf Clubs: TaylorMade’s Finest

Rory McIlroy is a TaylorMade athlete, having signed a multi-year endorsement deal with the brand in 2017. Since then, his golf bag has been stocked with TaylorMade’s latest and greatest technology. Here’s a closer look at the clubs McIlroy uses:

Driver: TaylorMade Qi10 (9 degrees)

McIlroy’s driver of choice is the TaylorMade Qi10. With its multi-material construction, the Qi10 allows Rory to optimise distance and enhance forgiveness, two key components of his game. Featuring an Infinity Carbon Crown and a third generation 60X Carbon Twist Face, TaylorMade have strategically designed the Qi10 to maximise these playing features. Rory typically uses a Fujikura Ventus Black 6X shaft to generate a more stable and penetrating flight off the tee.

Fairway Woods: TaylorMade Qi10 15 degrees (3-wood) and TaylorMade Qi10 18 degrees (5-wood)

For fairway woods, McIlroy carries the Qi10. These clubs offer powerful performance with a combination of high launch and low spin, which complements McIlroy’s aggressive play. His 3-wood is typically set to 15 degrees, and his 5-wood is set to 18 degrees, giving him flexibility off the tee and when attacking par 5s.

Irons: TaylorMade P-760 (3-9 iron)

Currently Rory is using a set of prototype RORS Proto irons fitted with Project X 7.0 shafts.

Occasionally you will find him using the P-760 irons which are now around 6 years old.

An alternative to these from the current TaylorMade offering would be the P-770. With a more compact shape they share the same design idea, are built for dominating distance and premium performance.

Wedges: TaylorMade Milled Grind 4 (46°, 50°, 54°)

When it comes to his short game, McIlroy relies on the TaylorMade Milled Grind 4 wedges. These wedges are known for their sharp grooves and precise milling, offering Rory the ability to create spin and control on shots around the green. His wedge setup includes 46°, 50°, and 54° lofts, helping him navigate a wide variety of short game shots, from full approach shots to delicate pitches and chips.

Putter: TaylorMade Spider Tour X3

Made famous by Rory the TaylorMade Spider Tour X3, has a sought after Spider X shape which combines the performance of a blade with the benefits of a mallet. The Spider X has been one of the most popular putters on Tour, known for its forgiving design and great feel on the greens. Rory’s putting, particularly in recent years, has benefitted from this model, which helps improve consistency in his stroke.

Golf Ball: TaylorMade TP5x

The golf ball is arguably the most important piece of equipment for a professional golfer. McIlroy plays the TaylorMade TP5x, a ball known for its combination of distance, spin control, and feel. The TP5x is a five-piece golf ball, offering Rory the best of both worlds: lower spin off the tee for more distance, and higher spin around the greens for more stopping power.

McIlroy has praised the TP5x for its stability in windy conditions, its responsiveness, and the extra distance it provides without sacrificing control on approach shots and around the greens.

Shaft and Grip Choices

While golf clubs and balls are the headliners, McIlroy also uses specific shafts and grips to optimize his performance. His driver shaft, the Fujikura Ventus Black 6X, is designed for players with higher swing speeds, giving Rory more stability and control during aggressive swings.

He also uses Golf Pride MCC grips across his clubs, an innovative hybrid grip with an exclusive Brushed Cotton Corn in the upper hand for all weather conditions. This is a preferred grip among many professionals for its firm feel and responsiveness.

Precision in Every Detail

Rory McIlroy’s golf equipment is tailored to match his power, precision, and consistency. His commitment to TaylorMade’s technology, combined with his skillset, has helped him maintain hisplace among the world’s best golfers. From the Qi10 driver that delivers massive distance to the TP5x ball that offers optimal spin control, every piece of gear is handpicked to bring out the best in his game.

Whether you’re a casual golfer or an aspiring pro, McIlroy’s setup is a perfect example of how critical equipment can be at the highest level of the sport.
